Florida is Partnering with the FAA on Advanced Air Mobility

By working directly with the Federal Aviation Administration, Florida is helping shape how Advanced Air Mobility is safely integrated into the U.S. airspace.

In March 2026, Florida was selected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to participate in the electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). As one of only eight applications selected, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will collaborate with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), the FAA, industry partners, educational institutions, and subject matter experts to support the safe, deliberate integration of next-generation aircraft into the National Airspace System (NAS).

What is the USDOT/FAA eIPP?

USDOT’s and FAA’s eIPP is an exclusive federal initiative focused on integrating emerging technologies like eVTOL and AAM aircraft into the NAS. The eIPP enables Florida and other awardees to work directly with the FAA to test real-world operations, validate technologies, and inform future safety standards, regulatory frameworks, and operating procedures that will apply across the nation as this new mode of transportation takes flight.

Participation in the eIPP provides Florida with the unique opportunity to contribute data, operational insight, and testing experience that will support federal decision-making, ensuring future AAM operations are introduced safely, consistently, and at scale.

Why the eIPP Matters to Florida

Advanced Air Mobility represents a new mode of transportation that complements existing road, rail, and aviation networks in Florida. Participating in the eIPP provides Florida with a structured pathway to prepare for the future.

Through the eIPP, the purpose-built SunTrax Air facility, and Florida’s Aerial Network, FDOT and its partners will leverage research and data to:

  • Model, simulate, and test aircraft, systems, and operations in controlled environments before new technologies are deployed
  • Evaluate how to integrate AAM into commercial services, emergency response, and cargo use cases
  • Study airspace integration and operational impacts alongside local, regional, and national stakeholders

FDOT plays a collaborative role in the eIPP by contributing real-world environments, infrastructure, and technical insight to support the development of federal rules and standards.

Florida’s eIPP focus areas include:

  • Operational readiness informed by years of statewide AAM planning and policy development
  • Research and testing through SunTrax Air, home of the nation’s first and only aerial test track
  • Academic research partnerships with universities within the state and an exclusive partnership with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
  • Stakeholder coordination including airports, emergency responders, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), aircraft operators, aviation experts and operators, academia, and the FAA

SunTrax Air provides the purpose-built infrastructure that supports the state’s participation in the eIPP, offering a controlled, real-world environment for advanced aviation testing and validation.
